In history, Spanish came to Cebu to try and conquer the island and they have been successful in spreading Christianity. But that was a long time ago. Today, when you try to roam around Cebu, it’s not Spanish that you will most likely encounter in the busy streets of the city. Koreans have been successful in, shall I say, invading Cebu. You can see them in every corner, as tourists or even as temporary residents. Korean schools are all around the city same as Korean restaurants. You will see a lot of them especially in the island of Mactan.
I have been curious about their food and have tried to imagine how it all tastes. As I’ve mentioned in my other blog, I am not a fan of those green leafy things but I do eat them, not often though. My first time trying out the famous Samgyeopsal was with my sister, Honey, and I have loved it ever since. She is braver than me in trying something new to the taste buds.
Samgyeopsal at Tongro
As I’ve said, there are a lot of Koreans in Cebu especially in Mactan Island, hence the flood of Korean restaurants in our sleepy island. Tongro Korean Restaurant is actually famous in Mactan for their spicy and super spicy barbecue. We have been eating here since forever.
Tongro is located in barangay Pusok, Lapu-Lapu City, just a few minutes ride from the airport. The restaurant is located just across Scape Skydeck in Azon, near Marcello Fernan Bridge.
One night, we tried their sampgyeopsal as per Nick’s request (it’s unusual since he does not love Korean food and so I agreed right away). Samgyeopsal is a Korean pork barbecue that has been famous not just in Cebu but in the country. It is a pork barbecue that is eaten with lettuce and other Korean side dishes like kimchi.
Tongro’s Crab Soup
My favorite steamed egg that comes with our Samgyeopsal order 🙂
Tongro has the best Samgyeopsal that I’ve tasted so far. It was actually just cheap when you think of it. We only paid Php 200.00 for the Samgyeopsal (pork belly, the side dishes, the soup, the kimchi). It was all worth it and since then, the beau has been loving it.
I love their kimchi and their steamed egg. The crab soup is the beau’s favorite. We actually ate here tonight. haha. My taste buds have been jumping with joy this week. We had our dinner here two times this week.
If you want to try this out, head out to Tongro’s. It’s good and doesn’t kill your pockets!
